Province-wide Event Has Local School Flavour
On Wednesday, April 20,2005 the Ontario-wide Children First Trust organization announced the recipients of their annual awards. These awards give families that otherwise could not afford it, some choice in the education of their children. 225 families from across Ontario were randomly chosen from the more than 4,000 applications received, and these families are offered grants to meet some of the costs associated with sending their children to independent schools.
At this year’s ceremony two families who had received the awards in the past were invited to share their experiences. As it turned out both were local families, and both send their children to John Knox, a Christian school in Fruitland that has students from Beamsville, Grimsby and East Hamilton. Peter Bronowicki and Bronwen Chisholm both had very positive things to say about their experience with John Knox. “The staff there has been wonderful, and it is reassuring to have our young children in an environment where our family’s values are supported,” remarked Mr. Bronowicki.
Surprisingly, the event had yet another John Knox Christian connection, when one of the school’s administrators, Mr. Tony Kamphuis, was chosen as the first recipient of an award for his work in promoting the idea of educational freedom. “For me it really comes down to having parents make the key decisions in the education of their children. Allowing families that kind of influence strengthens the educational experience, ” Mr. Kamphuis commented.
“The entire event was a great deal of fun! We hadn’t expected that our local Christian school would have that kind of profile at this year’s announcement, and we’re glad it provides us an opportunity to thank the Weston Foundation that makes the awards available in Ontario.
